The Word is a series of interviews hosted by broadcaster, Miranda Rae. Miranda’s drive is to give a voice to the voiceless and platform to people that all too often go unheard, from the streets to the board room from politicians to performers, from authors to activists. Miranda has presented on national, regional and local radio for over 30 yrs inc a weekly show on BBC Radio 5 for which she won a Sony Award. Miranda was also on Galaxy Radio for almost 10 years (now Kiss) where she trailblazed the then emerging dance music scene giving a platform to genres previously never played on the legal airwaves before... Awards also include Best Documentary in the British Podcast Awards, Best Doc in the European Lovie Awards, Honouree Winner in the global Webby Awards & nominated for the ARIAS (Oscars of Radio) all for the series ”Our Journey”. Miranda won Presenter of The Year in the regional MMG Awards & currently runs Ujima Radio and Sound Women SW Network aka Sound women Bristol CIC which is a non profit support network and in the last 3 years has taught over 1000 women and girls in a range or radio, podcasting and media skills. At just 18 Birdgirl has been made an honoury Doctarate by University of Bristol for her incredible charity work with Black 2 Nature and sharing wildlife with kids from the BAME community, she has seen over half of the worlds population of birds and battling social and environmental issues are a daily mission for this young activist. Guests also include Filmmaker and Director Paul Holbrook from Shrunk Films, multi-award winner and currently working on a new short film called Hollow, Paul is joined by Actress and writer Laura Bayston. They share fascinating insights in to the film making and acting world. Finally Miranda also shares her Christmas Day with 3 x Grammy Award winning The Sounds of Blackness. Musical Director and founder of The Sounds of Blackness, Gary Dennis Hines returns to The Word ahead of their 50th anniversary in January 2021. Gary shares some incredible stories about working with legends Stevie Wonder and Prince. The Sounds of Blackness is not only is one of the world's leading Gospel choirs consisting of some of the best musicians and singers but at the very heart of all they do is to battle social injustice and racism.

David Lammy MP was first elected in Tottenham in 2000, he was the 1st Black Briton to study law at Harvard University and has since gone onto pave the way as a leading politician and conisdered to be a real people's champion. In this podcast Miranda asks David about his jouney into politics, the importance of independent journalism and community radio. Plus David shares his views on Knife crime plus the significance of the post war African and Caribbean pioneers we have come to know as the Windrush Generation and how he reacted to this years Black Lives Matter protests.

In 2018 it was discovered there were only 26 teachers of colour out of 1300 in the city of Bristol. Teacher, activist, mentor and all round shero, Aisha Thomas decided to do something about it and 2 years on we hear about her next project and the success of the last 2 years.

Poet, activist, peoples champion and founder of CARGO Movement joins Miranda Rae on The Word in October 2020.
CARGO which stands for "Charting African Reslience Generating Opportunities" has become a global movement offering for solutions that have been needed for a long time, addressing issues that often make people feel uncomfortable. Originally CARGO was a series of 12 poems but now Lawrence Hoo and CARGO has become and incredible organisation addressing many difference issues around transatlantic slavery. Lawrence speaks about when the statue came down at the Black Lives Matter Protest on Sunday 7th June 2020 and about a new project to connect the Black students of Bristol to the Black communities.

Wishmaster is on the UK's rising Hip Hop stars. A true wordsmith and incredible recording artist from Bristol. Wishmaster's music and lyrics are powerful and relevant. Wishmaster caught the attention of the media when he spoke on the empty plinth of where the statue of slave trader Edward Colston had stood and was toppled at the Black Lives Matter Protest in Bristol on Sunday 7th June 2020, an iconic moment in Bristol history. Wishmaster has a superb album out on his label Official Recordings called The Bull available on all the usual digital platforms.

Sounds of Blackness musical director Gary Hines joins Miranda Rae to discuss the longevity of their 5 decades of making music. Based in Minneapolis their studio is round the corner from where the brutal murder of George Floyd took place and at the time of recording the city was still on fire.
